Seven design stories crossed our desk today, from a 1959 Mini to a bottle of hot sauce. On the surface they share nothing. Underneath, they are the same story told seven ways: the decision that determines everything is made at the concept phase, and it is almost always counterintuitive.
The order of decisions is the design. The original Mini did not get its famous packaging from clever detailing — Issigonis drew the passenger box first and folded the machine into the margins. The sequence of priorities, not the styling, was the invention. You can retrofit a surface; you can never retrofit the order.
A face is a bet. Audi and BMW placed opposite wagers on the grille this week — Audi doubling down on a mocked, unmistakable face; BMW retreating to restraint. Recognition and likeability are different axes, and the front of a car is where a brand quietly decides which one it values more.
An interface belongs to its context. Jony Ive spent twenty years deleting buttons, then filled Ferrari's first EV with them. Not a reversal — the same value, clarity, answered honestly in a car versus a phone. The touchscreen dashboard was a category error, imported from a device whose conditions of use are the inverse of a car's.
A material is two decisions. BMW M replaced carbon fibre with woven flax that beats it on the numbers but does not look like carbon. What a material does and what it means are separate choices; for thirty years carbon let teams get both for free.
The breakthrough comes from the wrong problem. The Super Soaker fell out of a NASA engineer's heat-pump experiment. Question the mechanism, not the interface — and remember that the person who cracks your category is often not in it.
Know when it is done. The Chemex has not changed in 85 years and sits in MoMA. If your product needs a version 2, maybe version 1 was never finished. Iteration is not a synonym for progress.
The package is the plan. Sriracha never advertised, never trademarked its name, never redesigned the bottle — and became the entire category. A distinctive, honest package is the cheapest, most durable marketing a company will ever buy, and it is decided at concept.
The thread through all seven: the highest-leverage moment in the whole pipeline is the one before anything is committed — and the best moves there tend to be the ones that feel backwards. That is the moment Depix exists to make visible.
