Six reports today, and beneath the different subjects — a battery, a library, a fold, a couture collection, a race car, a television — one thread runs through all of them: the decision that governs everything is made before there is anything to look at.
Xiaomi's 6mm power bank (The Material Decides the Form) is thin because a silicon-carbon cell was chosen upstream — the material set the boundary of the possible before a designer drew a line. Snohetta's Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is a monument that recedes into the Badlands because "regenerative" and "humble" were locked at the competition brief, not sprayed on at the end. Origami engineering (The Fold Is the Structure) draws its rigidity from a crease pattern that, once committed, cannot be patched — the concept phase with the safety net removed.
The same lesson kept arriving from every direction. At Dior, Jonathan Anderson's Grammar of Forms took a sculptor's rules rather than her surfaces — reference done right is grammar-extraction, decided upstream. Formula 1's 2026 reset cut downforce on purpose, optimising the system — two cars that can actually race — over the single-car metric of lap time, proof that the objective you set at the start is the highest-leverage decision there is. And Samsung's Frame TV (Most of Its Life, It's Off) designs the state an object spends most of its life in — idle, switched off — which you cannot retrofit onto a finished black slab.
Six subjects, one message for anyone who signs off a design: by the time there is a render to approve, the decisions that matter — the material, the objective, the geometry, the reference, the default state — have already been made. The concept phase is not the sketchy front of the process. It is the process.
