The Sound of Shutting a Door

The most reliable quality test a car buyer runs is not visual. They open the door and close it, and they listen. A solid, damped "thunk" reads as expensive; a tinny, reverberant clang reads as cheap. And that thunk is carefully engineered — sometimes even faked. Ford has admitted the door-closing sound was its first real chance to make a buyer feel the car's quality and craftsmanship, and to justify a premium price. Mercedes' sound-quality team insists the signal buyers respond to comes from the acoustic design of the door structure, latches and seals — not from sheer weight. The one CMF dimension nobody photographs is the one customers trust most.

We talk about colour, material and finish as if quality were purely something you see and touch. But an enormous part of "premium" is heard: the thunk of the door, the click of a switch, the hush of the cabin at speed. Sound is the hardest CMF property to fake, because it is not a surface — it is a behaviour of the whole structure. A door sounds solid only when its seals, cavities and latch are tuned together; a cabin sounds calm only after an intense engineering war against wind, tyre and mechanical noise, fought with acoustic laminated glass and sound-absorbing materials layered into the body. You cannot spray it on at the end.

As cars went electric and the engine's mask disappeared, every other noise grew louder by comparison — and quiet suddenly became a headline specification. Active noise cancellation now uses cabin microphones to generate an inverted sound wave that erases low-frequency drone; Buick sells "QuietTuning" as a named, marketed feature; and the quietest cabin is now a ranked, advertised league table that brands openly compete on. Silence, for a century a happy byproduct of good engineering, has become a deliberately designed product with its own decibel scorecard.

Then electrification created the exact opposite problem, and it is the most revealing part of the story. A near-silent car is genuinely dangerous to pedestrians, so regulators now mandate an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System, or AVAS — a synthesised sound at low speed that must change in pitch and intensity as the vehicle accelerates so that pedestrians, cyclists and blind users can read its motion by ear. For the first time in history, designers had to compose a car's voice from nothing at all. BMW hired the film composer Hans Zimmer to write IconicSounds Electric, a bespoke soundtrack for the i4 and iX intended to convey power and brand character rather than mere presence. Zimmer has been shaping BMW's electric voice since 2019, and the resulting AVAS note is now treated as a piece of deliberate sound branding — an identity signal as considered as a grille or a paint colour.

Here is the lesson for anyone shaping a product. The acoustic signature of a car — the thunk of the door, the hush of the cabin, the composed note of the motor — is not an NVH afterthought bolted on in the final months. It is decided by architecture: where the door seals sit, how stiff the body-in-white is, how much mass and how many cavities the door carries, where the speakers and cancellation microphones live. All of that is locked at the concept phase, when the package and the structure are set. You cannot add a convincing quality thunk to a finished car any more than you can add optical depth to flat paint; the sound is a consequence of structural decisions made long before a single surface is styled.

The industry spent a hundred years treating sound as noise to be suppressed. The best teams now treat it as a material to be composed — the last, invisible layer of CMF, and quite possibly the most emotional one, because you feel it in your chest a beat before you can name it. A door that lands with a "thunk", a cabin that falls to a hush, a motor that sings a brand's own signature: none of it is visible, all of it is engineered, and all of it is decided early. The eye judges a car in the showroom. The ear decides whether you actually believe it.
