Sometime in late 2026, if the certification timelines hold, the first commercial air taxis will begin carrying passengers — Joby with Delta in the US, Archer in the UAE. Beneath the hype, there is a genuinely remarkable design fact hiding in plain sight: the eVTOL is the first entirely new aircraft category since the helicopter in the 1940s. That makes it the rarest thing a designer ever gets to touch — a vehicle typology with nothing to copy.
Almost every object we design arrives with a reference class attached. A new car is measured against other cars; a chair against chairs. The reference is a crutch and a cage: it tells you what "right" looks like and quietly forbids anything too far outside it. The eVTOL has none of that. There is no century of air-taxi heritage, no canonical silhouette, no agreed answer even on rotor count — Joby uses six tilting rotors, Archer twelve. That is an emotional, perceptual decision, and it is made at the concept phase, in the proportion and the stance, long before any of it is certified.
Sound is the same story. eVTOLs run at roughly 45–65 dB against a helicopter's 80–100, and the industry knows noise complaints can kill a route faster than any engineering problem — yet there are no settled noise standards to design to. So how the aircraft sounds over a city — Joby aims for a note that blends into the background — becomes a self-imposed design decision, a signature chosen at the concept phase rather than tuned out at the end.
The stakes are unusually concrete for a new category. Archer is the official air-taxi provider of the LA28 Olympics; Delta imagines an air-taxi transfer that lands you in Midtown before your checked bags arrive. Those debut moments will set the public's first impression of the entire typology — and the first impression of a new category is almost impossible to reset later.
