The Paper Clip: There Is No Perfect Design

To product designers, the Gem paper clip is a kind of miracle — a single loop of bent wire, essentially unchanged for over a century, so resolved that it is routinely cited as a Platonic form of design. It costs almost nothing, holds paper firmly without tearing it, springs back, stores flat, and needs no instructions. It looks like the definition of a perfect object. And the engineer Henry Petroski spent a career explaining, gently, why that is exactly the wrong lesson.

The Gem emerged in Britain in the early 1870s, and its signature double-loop is the whole trick: it lets you slide papers in without the clip splaying out at an angle, the flaw that doomed earlier single-loop designs. Famously, the man most often credited with inventing it — the Norwegian Johan Vaaler — did not; his 1899 patent lacked the crucial second loop, was never manufactured, and became a national myth only decades later through a patent clerk's error. Even the question of who actually made it is unsettled. Even the credit for the perfect design is wrong.

Here is the part that matters. Since the Gem took hold, inventors have patented hundreds of "better" paper clips: versions with ridges for extra grip, clips of copper or gold that won't rust and mark the page, owl-eyed shapes that hold small batches more tightly. And nearly every one of them is genuinely better than the Gem — at one specific thing, for some people, some of the time. They also nearly all failed. Because each improvement bought its advantage by giving something else away: cost, or simplicity, or the ability to store without tangling, or the sheer intuitive obviousness of the thing.

This is the argument at the heart of Petroski's work, and the title of one of his books says it outright: there is no perfect design. "Perfect" is not an absolute; it is always perfect for something — a use, a user, a context. The Gem doesn't win because it is the best clip at any single task. It wins because it is the best compromise across the widest possible range of tasks: good enough at everything, disastrous at nothing, cheap enough for everyone. A design optimised for one dimension will always beat it in that dimension — and lose everywhere else.

For anyone who designs, this is a genuinely uncomfortable idea, because the instinct of a designer is to improve. You look at the Gem, you see that it can't hold fifty sheets, that it slips, that clips hook together in the drawer, and every one of those is a real, fixable flaw. Petroski's point — the one he built an entire body of work around — is that fixing any of them tends to make the object worse overall, because the flaws are the price of the balance. The Gem is not flawless. It is optimally flawed. And knowing the difference between a flaw worth fixing and a flaw that is holding the whole compromise together is one of the hardest judgments in design. The temptation is to treat every complaint as a brief; the discipline is to ask whether quietly solving it would break three other things that nobody was complaining about.

It reframes what "improvement" even means. Most of the failed better paper clips were the work of smart people solving a real problem correctly — and shipping something worse, because they optimised a corner instead of the whole. The evolution of everyday things, Petroski argued, isn't a march toward perfection; it's a long negotiation among competing constraints, and the survivors are the ones that balanced them best, not the ones that maxed any single one out. It is the same lesson as his study of success through failure: progress comes from respecting the trade-offs, not from denying them.
