Design for the Teardown
For about a decade, the highest compliment you could pay a gadget was that it looked sealed. Unibody. Seamless. No visible screws, no seams, no obvious way in — the whole object machined or moulded as if it had grown that way. It read as premium, as resolved, as the future. And it quietly settled a question most people never noticed was being asked: how does this thing come apart? The answer, almost always, was "with a heat gun, a suction cup, a pile of proprietary tools, and a decent chance of breaking it."
That answer is now a design problem, because a regulator made it one. From 18 February 2027, any smartphone, tablet, wireless earbud or laptop sold in the European Union must let an owner swap the battery using common tools — no solvents, no heat guns, no proprietary kits. It is Article 11 of Regulation 2023/1542, and it is the bluntest instrument yet aimed at planned obsolescence.
Here is the part designers should sit with. The rule does not dictate how the product looks. It dictates an outcome — the battery must come out cleanly — and leaves the aesthetics entirely open. A battery can still live inside a sealed enclosure, as long as it can be removed without damage. The regulation simply refuses to accept the old excuse that "sealed and beautiful" and "repairable" are opposites. It moved the difficulty back to where it always belonged: the concept phase.
Because sealing a product shut was never the absence of a decision. It was a decision — a very deliberate one. Gluing the battery in bought a thinner chassis, a cleaner back, a more premium object on the shelf on day one. The cost of that decision was real, but it was deferred and displaced: the owner paid it two years later at a repair counter, and the planet paid it as electronic waste. "How it comes apart" wasn't undesigned. It was designed to be someone else's problem.
You cannot fix that at the end — and this is the whole point. Disassembly is not a feature you can bolt on once the surfaces are frozen. It is baked into the earliest choices: where the seams fall, which fasteners hold what, whether the adhesive releases or fights back, how the modules are bounded. Decide those late and no amount of goodwill makes a glued slab openable. Decide them early and the teardown becomes part of the object's grammar rather than a violation of it.
The proof that it can be done beautifully already exists. Fairphone has designed hand-removable batteries for years — the Fairphone 6 makes nearly every core module, from cameras to display, user-replaceable — and Framework has built a whole laptop brand on parts you are expected to open, swap and upgrade. Neither looks like a science project. They look like products that decided, at the concept stage, that coming apart was a feature, not a failure — the case modular design and sustainable design have made for years, now with a legal deadline behind it.
This is bigger than phones. Every product has an end — a moment when it needs to be repaired, upgraded, recycled or thrown away — and that end is a design decision whether or not anyone consciously makes it. Detailing only the unveiling and letting the teardown fall where it may is exactly the pattern the right to repair movement grew up to correct. The interesting question stops being "how seamless can we make it?" and becomes "how gracefully can it come apart — and did we decide that on purpose?"
None of this means the sealed object was wrong to want. Thinness, cleanliness and integrity are real values. The shift is that they can no longer be bought silently on credit, with the bill mailed to the owner and the landfill. The teardown is now on the same page of the brief as the reveal.
So the next time a product is praised for having no visible seams, it is worth asking the concept-phase question underneath: not just how it goes together, but how it was designed to come apart. Because in 2027, for a large part of the world, that is no longer an afterthought a studio can skip. It is the design.
