The Biggest U.S. Banknote Redesign in Decades Is the Part You'll Never See
Every few decades the United States redraws its money, and every time the public argument is about the same thing: the portrait. Whose face, facing which way, how large. So when the Bureau of Engraving and Printing confirmed that a redesigned $10 note — the first in a new family the government has named Catalyst — will be ready for production no later than 2026, attention went straight to Alexander Hamilton, who has held the $10 since 1929, and whether he would survive the cut. That is exactly the wrong place to look. The most consequential decisions in this redesign are the ones you will never consciously see.
Start with the one you will feel. For the first time, U.S. paper currency will carry a raised tactile feature — a physically embossed element, applied with the same high-pressure intaglio process used for the fine engraving, that lets a blind or low-vision person identify a note's denomination by touch alone. This is not a garnish. The U.S. has been one of the last major economies whose banknotes are uniform in size and, to a fingertip, effectively identical across denominations — a design failure so serious that a federal court found it discriminated against the visually impaired and ordered Treasury to fix it. The tactile feature is the answer to a nearly two-decade-old problem, and the BEP reports it is already completed and on schedule. Most people will run a thumb across the next ten and never notice it. That invisibility is the entire point.
Then there is the security, which the BEP names as the primary purpose of redrawing the note at all. The Catalyst series moves beyond today's colour-shifting ink and embedded ribbon toward more sophisticated optically variable devices — elements that change appearance as the note tilts — alongside advanced watermarking. A banknote is one of the only mass-produced objects that must be, at the same time, beautiful, instantly recognisable, machine-readable at industrial scale, durable enough to survive years folded in a pocket, and effectively impossible to counterfeit with technology that does not exist yet. As one of the world's banknote makers puts it, a new note is a future-proofing opportunity: you are not designing against today's forger but against the tools that will be cheap and commonplace long after the design is locked.
And locked is the operative word, because this is a concept-phase story in its purest form. Once a banknote design is finalised it is printed in the billions and stays in circulation for years; the entire retail economy re-tools around it, and businesses have to update cash-handling and validation equipment just to accept it. There is no patch, no point release, no quiet mid-cycle fix. Every property the note will ever have — the security architecture, exactly where the tactile mark sits, how the elements survive folding and laundering, how a vending machine reads it in a quarter-second — has to be decided before the first sheet runs, and is then committed for a generation. The reason Treasury is rolling the family out one denomination at a time, the $10 first and the rest across the following decade, is precisely that each note is a near-irreversible bet it cannot afford to get wrong.
This is why the portrait is the least interesting decision on the bill. The face is the surface — the part designed to be seen, and therefore the part designed to be argued about. The design intelligence lives in the constraints almost nobody registers: an accessibility feature that had to be engineered into the printing process itself, a security system aimed at threats a decade away, a durability and readability specification that quietly governs materials and geometry. The U.S. is not alone in the reckoning; the European Central Bank is running its own multi-year redesign, narrowing themes and motifs years ahead of a note anyone will ever hold, so that the security and production work can be locked long before a single bill is issued. Everyone photographs the picture; the engineers are solving the note.
The lesson generalises well past currency. In almost any product, the decisions that get debated in public are the visible ones — the colour, the logo, the face on the front. The decisions that determine whether the thing actually works for everyone, resists the future, and survives contact with the real world are made quietly at the very start, in the phase where they are still cheap to change and impossible to see. Get them right and no one notices. Get them wrong and no amount of beautiful engraving will save the note. The next ten-dollar bill will be judged on Hamilton's face. It should be judged on everything you can't.
