The Watch That Keeps Bad Time

By any functional measure, the mechanical wristwatch is a bad product. A good automatic movement drifts five to ten seconds a day; a cheap quartz manages a few seconds a month; the phone in your pocket is effectively perfect and free. If a watch's job is to tell you the time, the mechanical watch does that job worse than almost anything else you could strap on. And yet, in the first half of 2026, Swiss watch exports held broadly steady, rose 11.2% in June to nearly 2.4 billion francs, and one of the standout growth stories was mechanical pieces — with sub-500-franc mechanical watches up almost 24% by volume.

That only looks like a paradox if you believe the industry is in the timekeeping business. It isn't, and it hasn't been for fifty years. The moment that settled it was the quartz crisis of the 1970s, when cheap, accurate quartz arrived and nearly wiped Swiss watchmaking out — precisely because Switzerland still thought it sold accuracy. The houses that survived did so by deciding, at the concept stage, that the object was for something else entirely. They stopped competing on function and relocated the whole value of the watch from what it does to what it is.

Look at what buyers say they are paying for, and the timekeeping never appears. They talk about a purely mechanical object in an electronic world — no battery, no chip, no nightly charge, no software update. They talk about the craft and the visible movement, the tiny gears in motion, the heritage, the sense the thing will outlive them. Market analysts and industry trackers describe the same demand in the language of artistry, permanence and value retention, not precision, and the broader traditional-watch market reads the same way. A mechanical watch is bought as an heirloom, an argument, a small daily encounter with something made — the time it keeps is almost beside the point, which is just as well, because the time it keeps is bad.

This is the design lesson the category teaches, and it is a concept-phase one. The decisive question a watchmaker answers is not "how accurate can we make it" — that was solved and then abandoned — but "what is this object actually for." Decide it is for telling time and you are permanently exposed: quartz beat you, then the phone beat quartz, and something will beat the phone. Decide it is for craft, meaning and permanence, and there is nothing to out-compete, because no better machine threatens a value that was never about being a machine. Accuracy, the one thing everyone assumes a watch is about, was given away on purpose — and giving it away is exactly what made the object durable.

The market keeps proving it. Swiss exports wobble quarter to quarter with tariffs and currencies and uncertain outlooks, but the mechanical watch as a category has now survived two technologies that each did its supposed job vastly better, and it is still here, still growing, still expensive — a pattern the long-run export record makes hard to dismiss as nostalgia. You cannot say the same about the pocket calculator, the standalone GPS or the compact camera — objects that stayed in the function business and were replaced the instant something did the function better.

The transferable point is uncomfortable for anyone building a product around a capability. If the value of your object is the job it does, you are renting that value from the current state of technology, and the lease is always running out. The mechanical watch is instructive precisely because it looks irrational: it kept the worse function and won, because someone decided at the very beginning that the function was never the point.

The watch that keeps bad time keeps selling — not in spite of its inaccuracy, but because its makers understood, long before their rivals, that they were never really selling time.
