You Can't Add Repairable

On 31 July 2026, the EU's Right to Repair directive becomes fully binding across all 27 member states. From that date a manufacturer selling into Europe must make products repairable at a reasonable price, keep spare parts available for years, hand over a repair information form, and - the part that matters most for designers - stop using glue where a screw would do. The directive explicitly targets sealed unibody construction, adhesives in place of fasteners, and the parts-pairing software locks that stop a swapped component from working. Products now carry a visible repairability score, the way appliances carry an energy label.

Almost every headline files this under sustainability or consumer rights. Both are true. But there is a sharper reading, and it is a concept-phase one: the EU has just legislated a decision that can only be made at the very beginning of a product's life.

Here is the uncomfortable engineering fact underneath the law. Repairability is not a feature. You cannot add it to a finished design. A phone architected as a single glued sandwich of glass, battery and board cannot be made "repairable" with a firmware update or a spare-parts webpage; the battery is bonded to the chassis, the screen is fused to the frame, the whole object was conceived as a thing that is never meant to open. To make it repairable you would have to redesign it from the inside out - which is to say, design a different product. Openable is decided at the first architecture sketch, or it is not decided at all.

This is exactly why the two brands everyone points to did not get there by trying harder at the end. Fairphone's latest model scores a perfect 10 out of 10 for repairability because "this comes apart with a screwdriver" was its founding premise, not a late constraint. Framework builds laptops whose graphics unit is a module you swap rather than a chip you solder, because the entire company exists to answer one question - what if it opens? - settled before a single surface was styled. Their repairability is not a virtue bolted on top of the design; it IS the design. Everything else - the spare-parts model, the years of updates, the high scores - falls out of that one early decision.

Which is why the next two years will be quietly brutal for everyone else. A company that spent a decade optimising for the thinnest possible sealed slab cannot comply by writing a repair manual; it has to unwind an architecture, and architecture is the one layer you cannot cheaply change late. France's repairability index already previewed the sorting: the products that score well were conceived to score well, and the ones that score badly were conceived to be sealed. No amount of downstream effort moves a design across that line. You are on whichever side of it your concept phase put you. The tell is parts-pairing: a software lock that stops even a physically-correct replacement part from working unless the manufacturer blesses it. That is not an engineering necessity; it is the philosophy of the sealed slab, encoded in firmware - a late, defensive attempt to keep a product closed that was already designed closed.

That is the real lesson, and it reaches far beyond phones. Repairability is the clearest example in all of design of a property that is free at the concept stage and impossible to retrofit. Deciding, on day one, that a product will open - that its parts will be discrete, its fasteners reversible, its failures survivable - costs almost nothing while everything is still a sketch. Deciding it after the tooling is cut costs the entire product. The EU did not really ban a material or a glue. It banned a way of not-deciding: of sealing the object shut and pushing every consequence - the dead battery, the cracked screen, the two-year lifespan - downstream to the customer and the landfill.

"Sustainable" and "repairable" are being written into law as compliance. But underneath the compliance is the oldest truth in design: the decisions that matter most are the ones you can only make while it is still cheap to change everything. Repair was always one of them. Now it is simply the law.
