Brussels just ended the era of the sealed-shut phone.

For fifteen years, the most admired phones were the ones that gave you nothing to hold onto. No seam, no door, no screw, no battery you could ever reach. Thinness and seamlessness stopped being attributes and became the whole point — a single sealed slab that arrived perfect and aged shut. The EU has just decided that this design language is over.

Under Regulation 2023/1542, every smartphone and tablet sold in the EU from 18 February 2027 must carry a battery a normal person can remove and replace with standard tools. No proprietary jigs, no heat guns, no solvent baths, no glue you have to defeat. Right to Repair Europe and the Commission published the implementing guidelines this spring, and they are unusually specific about the things designers spent a decade engineering out: adhesives that need heat or solvent are banned, replacement cells must be sold at a reasonable price for at least five years, and the swap has to be doable on a kitchen table. The polished monolith is not being discouraged. It is being legislated away.

This is the kind of decision a design team cannot treat as a late-stage compliance checkbox, because it reaches all the way back into the silhouette. A phone you can open is a different object from a phone you can't. It needs a back that detaches and re-seats, a gasket that survives being opened and closed by someone who has never opened a phone, and a sealing strategy that holds IP67 after the owner has been inside it twice. The honest estimate is half a millimetre to a millimetre of added thickness — which sounds trivial until you remember that the entire premium smartphone aesthetic was built on shaving exactly that. The seam, the detail nobody wanted to draw, is coming back to the front of the object whether the studio likes it or not.

What makes this a genuine design-intelligence problem rather than a regulatory one is the loophole. The rule exempts a device if its battery survives roughly 800 cycles at 83 percent capacity, or 1,000 at 80 percent, and the phone is rated IP67 or better. In other words, you can keep your sealed unibody if you can prove the cell simply lasts. So every team now faces a real fork at concept phase, not at certification: redraw the body around a serviceable, clip-in, gasketed back — or pour the engineering into a cell durable enough to dodge the requirement entirely and keep the seamless slab. Two completely different products, two different supply chains, two different five-year stories, and the choice has to be made before anyone tools a single part.

Both paths fail in places the launch render will never show. The glamour shot of a removable phone is the back panel lifted cleanly away in a beam of studio light. The truth is the gasket on its fourth re-seat, the back that develops a faint creak in month nine, the waterproof claim that has to survive an owner's clumsy thumbnail, the resale buyer who finds the seam has collected grit. The truth of the sealed-cell path is the brand quietly betting that a chemistry roadmap will hold for five years of real charging behaviour it cannot fully simulate. None of those states live in the hero frame. All of them decide whether the design was right.

This is exactly the work that belongs at the concept phase, when the cost of being wrong is a render and not a recall. The decision is not "removable or sealed" as a slogan; it is whether a given form survives being opened, dropped, soaked, aged, and resold — tested before the housing is committed, in the lived and worst-case states the marketing image is built to hide. The regulation did not take taste away from phone designers. It took away the one move they had been hiding behind, and handed the seam back as a problem worth solving in the open.
